In Debt? Things Not To Do To Get Out Of Debt
By Mary Gallivan
If you feel you are the only person in debt rest assured that you are not alone. You need to address the problem and discover a solution to your debt. There is a lot of information on the Internet and articles that have been written on debt management and how to get out of debt.
However, here are some things NOT to do when reviewing your debts and looking after your finances.
DON'T:
- Ignore the problem hoping it will go away - it won't. There are ways to deal with your debt - it's not the end of the world.
- Be afraid to ask for help. Even a close friend can offer welcome support.
- Don't put letters in a drawer unopened and hope they will go away - they won't. When you do open them don't put them away and forget about them. Whatever you do, don't put them through the shredder.
- Keep your debt problem to yourself. Your friends and family may be able to help you work towards a solution. Otherwise, if you don't want them to know then contact a money advice agency.
- Let yourself get a bad credit history. You may end up with a negative credit rating that lasts for six years if creditors record that you owe them money.
- Give up trying to reach an agreement with your creditors even if they are unhelpful.
- Sign up for a store card if possible. If you do, make sure that you read all the small print very carefully as most store cards have a high interest rate.
- Use your credit card like cash. Interest is charged on your purchases and it's a higher rate for cash withdrawals.
- Be fooled by the sales. First of all think about whether you really need it. Buying something that is reduced in the sales is still costing you money. If something which normally sells for £100 is reduced by 25%, don't think of it as saving you £25 but of costing you £75.
- Be impulsive when shopping. Do you really need it? Think carefully. Give yourself time to consider it - how much do you need it, how much does it cost, can you afford it? There's a difference between having money in your purse or pocket to pay for it and being able to afford it.
- Buy something if you are better off borrowing or renting it. For example, rent CDs and/or DVDs instead of buying your own copies. Don't buy books if you can borrow them from the library.
These are just a few suggestions of things NOT to do when trying to get out of debt.
By following some of these you should be on your way to a debt-free life.
